The skirmish system is probably the biggest addition to LotRO that comes with the Siege of Mirkwood expansion. The size of the adition is reflected in the number of developer diaries that have been written on the system, there are no less than six! Given the amount of developer coverage of this major game mechanic there has been relativity little player comment, but most comments seem to suggest that they are well worth doing! I’ll start by giving you a breakdown of the diaries:
Highlights and links to screen shots and videos of the skirmishes and rewards follow the break.

The new raids introduce bosses with yet more dread (no surprises there then!). The main raiding area is Dol Guldur, and has been described in a dev diary. They break down into five instances (available at launch) as follows:

Sadly there is no new crafting tier, but there are new recipes from the elves in Mirkwood. The new recipes have similar statistics to those available in Lothlorien but have less requirements (no Mithril flake required) and are multi not single use. The recipes also have multiple output options allowing them to be customised for different classes.

In Mines of Moria the maximum level for a character was set to 60. The level cap has been raised to Level 65 in Mirkwood, however there are only limited changes to skills and traits with this change. Essentially each class is either getting one new skill or one improved skill as part of the upgrade. The major changes come in terms of the increased stats due to level increases and the ability to collect new higher level weapons. This has lead to a bit of discussion on the forums, (and here). The major discussion point is that the new levels seem more like a gating operation rather than an opportunity to acquire something new, and the new weapons therefore an unnecessary grind.
